About Casa Montessori

Casa Montessori, Inc., a non-profit, non-sectarian, California corporation was founded in 1971 by Mrs. Sakura M. Long and three other directors. It has grown from 75 students to the present size of 176 children and 25 faculty/staff. We have a multi-cultural student body; our children are from all over the world! Casa Montessori has been a member of the American Montessori Society since 1973.

The school campus consists of seven classrooms, administration building, parking lot, multi-purpose auditorium, playground, and new library. The location is 17633 Lassen Street, Northridge, California 91325.

A full day program for 2 1/2 to 12 year olds is offered. Casa Montessori is non-discriminatory and welcomes all races, religions, nationalities, and ethnic origins. The goal of Casa Montessori is to develop the full potential of each child.

Applications for admission are accepted during the spring for the fall semester. Interested parents should request information and application forms from the school office. Notification of acceptance will be sent after an interview with the child and parents.

Primary Program

Children learn concentration, order, and skills adapted to our culture by practical life activities. They increase the activity of their senses through the sensorial materials.

Reading, writing, and math are developed through hands-on Montessori materials. Additional learning includes Geography - starting from land and water through people and culture of the world, simple scientific experiments, History, Botany, Zoology, Art, Music, and physical activities.

Elementary Program

The Montessori school is designed to accommodate the developmental stages of children which occur in three year cycles. Therefore, we are ungraded. These mixed age groupings of children stay together for blocks of time in the same room.

All materials show the theories in concrete form, and help to lead into the abstract. The subjects are learned by an integrated curriculum. The strategy of Montessori education is to develop the whole child through "whole views," because all knowledge is interrelated.

Our children's test scores are very high on the National Percentile Rank. However, their most important development at Casa Montessori is self-motivation and direction, the ability to make appropriate decisions, a sense of responsibility for self, others, and the environment in which we live.

... "An active learner - one who does not merely receive a given body of knowledge as inert ideas to be memorized and repeated, but who discovers for himself and is able to apply what he learns to new situations."

Rita Kramer, "Maria Montessori"

Why Montessori?

There is no greater joy for parents than to see their young children develop to their fullest potential. The joy is, in fact, a reflection of the pleasure experienced by the children as they work in an environment eliciting their best efforts.
The true Montessori school provides such an environment. Rich in sensorial and other materials, which Dr. Montessori designed with great precision, this uniquely prepared classroom setting stimulates the child's natural desire to learn, to build, and to explore. Most importantly, it allows him to work at maximum effort during those periods of high sensitivity when young children learn with extraordinary ease and enthusiasm. Montessori wrote, "the child is endowed with a special sensibility which urges him to focus his attention on certain aspects of his environment to the exclusion of others."

Thus, the small child is recognized as a human being, more in need of work than play, in need of freedom as much as intelligent direction. He is free to act on his spontaneous bursts of creativity, with no interference, but rather, positive direction from his teacher. The school fosters the child's sense of independence and responsibility. He develops his own discipline which Monetssori described as follows: "We call an individual disciplined when he is master of himself, and can, therefore, regulate his own conduct..."
